A Reckoning...

[You are dead.

Where you awaken is not of your cabin on the train but rather firm earth, the skies above you being nothing but an inky blackness as for as you can see. And yet throughout the darkness, you are surrounded by soft lighting and peculiar music playing all around you. When your senses become less muddled, you will notice that the music playing is upbeat and joyful almost. But let's face it, you are probably thinking this is some sort of creepy hell that you got yourself into after biting the bullet.

It all depends if you find circuses to be such a place because that is where you find yourself. The setting feels more antique than what you may assume a circus to look like, more Victorian themed than what one can be called. First the sound picks up and then you can smell something delectable in the air, catching popped corn and fried sweets and maybe something to drink? It's more than likely here.

Going down the main way, you can see some classic carnival games such as skee ball, ring toss, balloon popping if you are inclined to try and take your mind of the fact that you didn't have a choice in coming here. But despite the joyous air of the circus, there are not many people here that can help you out...or are there?


Lost souls just like yourself who met with the same horrible fate...perhaps an accord can be struck. After all, it looks like you will be here for awhile.]

Ah...King's a good man. I'm sure he'll do his best to find your dad, wherever he might be, and pass on that message.

Yeah, I told him how to find him. ... It's a complicated relationship.

... He treated me more like a student than a son. I guess that’s because I was adopted... and he never told me.

[She turns to him, a curious expression on her face.] ...how did you find out, then?

My sister. Or... adopted sister, I guess. She piloted before me... and took time to look for who my mom was. It was one of the soldiers assigned to my group... and she killed herself so Kana wouldn't hesitate shooting the enemy when they grabbed her.

[Oh. Eliza actually shifts a bit closer, one arm raised towards him in an attempt to offer comfort, though unsure of whether it'll be accepted.]

...I'm sorry. That...that all sounds so terrible. [She's curious about the whole piloting thing, but this doesn't feel like the right time to bring it up.]

[He pulls away, almost violently. He barely knows her - she has not even gotten close to hug privileges yet.]

... I watched them all die. All the pilots before me. I guess I was the only one shitty enough to show up in this kind of place - though Kako was worse. He was a coward and a creep. A few of the pilots for fights on our version of Earth used their chance to enact petty revenge... I guess that's why generally you don't hand that kind of power to most people near my age.

[Hey, she was just going to go for a shoulder pat first. Still, she puts her arm back down and listens.]

Why...why did they give you that kind of power then? Was it something only younger people could control, or use at full power, or something like that? [Once again, she's reminded of Kyubey and his way of recruiting young girls...]

... Yes and no. Younger people could use it with more power, but... I think that it was just the people he had time to find. There was no telling when the battle would start again, and if he lost, that would have been it for his version of Earth.

[His world sure does sound terrible, in many ways.]

Oh...I guess protecting Earth is a really important reason. And so there also wasn't time to figure out which people would use the power more wisely or stuff like that?

Not really, no. ... We knew when it was our turn to pilot. It was like a voice in our head without words. But we never knew when the battle would start.
